By Your Side- a dream in theory…

51cucezdthl-_sy346_

Summary:

An irresistible story from Kasie West that explores the timeless question What do you do when you fall for the person you least expect?

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn at first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

My Thoughts:

PS I Like You was my first Kasie West book early last year as an ARC. I immediately fell in love with that book and was ready to read my next book from her. I have her back list, but then I heard about this one and got an ARC.

First things first…the concept of getting locked in a library. SIGN. ME. UP.

That idea sounded perfect to me from the beginning, but I immediately felt bad for Autumn because where were her friends? Why didn’t anyone come for her? (Spoiler: We learn that later.) I think I maybe even spent too much time wondering where the heck her friends were and why they didn’t come back for her.

I do think I enjoyed the library parts more than the middle of the book just because some of the middle was lots of back and forth and got frustrating at times.

I will admit, that there were parts that dragged for me, but for the most part, I zoomed through the book. There was lots of back and forth with Dax, yet it also was understandable for his character and situation.

Overall, this is still a classic Kasie West book. It isn’t my favorite, but it is still a cute, fast read if you’re looking for a contemporary romance. By Your Side releases next week, January 31, so be sure to pick it up if this is what you’re looking for!

2015 recap and suggestions

First things first…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!

200-4.gif

Yep, I’m a NYE baby, so I’m kind of partially biased to New Year’s Eve being the best holiday. It’s neat having a birthday on NYE since the next year of life starts with a brand new year completely.

In 2015 I plan to make more time for reading. I did a LOT of slacking this year- especially on my blog- but I’m hoping to be a lot more consistent this year.

But on to the books…I want to talk about my favorite reads from 2015!

Top Reads from 2015:

These aren’t necessarily in any particular order…I tried and it was too hard to do.

So…

wrathandthedawn

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve recommended Wrath and the Dawn. I got it at work and have several kids hooked on it. We’re all anxiously awaiting Rose and the Dagger.

This. Book.

It is hard to explain how I feel about this book. It made me happy, furious, confused, shocked…pretty much every emotion. I’m SO excited for the next installment and can’t wait for the movie to get started.

23341894

2015 is the year that I fully embraced how much I adore contemporary romance in YA. I’ve always been a sci-fi/fantasy fan, and still am, but this year I read so many contemporary and romance books that I decided it must be my thing too.

I loved Every Last Word. LOVED. I bragged on it so much that a friend was dying to read it and in turn was ecstatic to get an ARC from Tamara at RT back in May. (FYI, Tamara is the sweetest ever. If you get the chance to meet her then don’t miss out!)

everythingeverything

I know that I just recently reviewed this, but here’s your reminder….Everything Everything is EVERYTHING. Wrath and the Dawn was my favorite book of the year from June all the way to last week and then this book happened. SO GOOD. Get it.

MY FAVORITE SUPERHERO FINALLY GETS RECOGNITION!

That’s my thoughts on this one. Actually it’s more like “alsdkjfioea yasssss, Natasha!!” LOVE. HER. Marvel still won’t make a Black Widow movie, but this book would make a perfect movie. Get on it, Marvel.

22429350

This was my first Emery Lord book and I’m now hooked. Plus, the guy in the book is a nerd who is obsessed with Firefly? Yes, please!

rebel

A review is coming on this soon since it doesn’t release until March, but…MAN. So fun. I can’t wait for this to come out so that I can shout it’s praises even more!

november9

I’m a major Colleen Hoover fan. I don’t try to hide it. I read November 9 in one day and got completely sucked in. This might be my favorite book from her, but it definitely was among my favorite reads of the year.

23719270

A western. I never thought I’d love a Western, but I was hooked. Plus, this definitely wins my vote for best book cover of 2015- hands down- it is GORGEOUS.

I feel like I should add one more just for the sake of having a top 10, but I can’t necessarily keep this in the same league.

HOWEVER….

51m54kDm+DL._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_

You can’t read it without having read the rest of the series, but WINTER was one of my favorite reads of the year and a perfect finale to the Lunar Chronicles!

So there you have it…my top 10 favorite books I read in 2015. There were several more that were close to being added that just barely missed out, but these were my favorites by far.

Here’s to 2016 being just as strong of a year for book releases!

Monday Musings!

So many things to talk about, so let’s jump into it…

First things first…

….I’m the realest?

No, that’s not right.

It’s Bookmail!!

usedtobe

I requested this awesome ARC at the beginning of the month from Simon & Schuster and was excited to find it in my mail Friday! It. Sounds. Awesome. Sad! …but awesome.

Check it out:

In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.

Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes.

What was once simple, is now complex. What Eden once loved—who she once loved—she now hates. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

In the tradition of SPEAK??? Don’t mind if I do! That’s one of my all-time favorites!

Second things…second?

CURRENTLY READING!

51m54kDm+DL._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_

Okay so maybe I’m too lazy to add the actual cover without the “first two chapters free!” at the top…oops?

Anyways!

My copy of Winter came on Wednesday and I immediately started it Wednesday, but I haven’t done much reading to make good progress on it. I think it’s almost like I’m scared to read it. This is honestly one of (if not THE) my favorite series, so I’m sad to see it end even thought I’m ecstatic to see how it all plays out. Hopefully I’ll be done this week and if not I’ll take it with me on vacation like I originally planned.

Speaking of vacation!

I know that Saturday I spoke of two bookstores that I plan to visit while in Nashville next week, but TOMORROW I’ll have a post about my vacation TBR!

Y’all.

A whole WEEK of no schedule!

I won’t have a 5 am alarm set so that I can leave by 6:30 to be at work by 7:15.

I love my job, but I’m SO READY for a break!

one last thing…

I have a book order coming in today at work and I’m so excited for it!

Some books are series additions that kids are ready for and some awesome series that I’m ready to get them hooked on. Either way, my kids at work are PUMPED to get some new books. I don’t know how their last librarians ordered, but I tried to genuinely choose things that I knew that they would love.

What? That’s what a librarian is supposed to do? I know that, but it shocks my kids when I give them recommendations and think SPECIFICALLY of them. It breaks my heart that they weren’t already used to that from previous librarians!

Until tomorrow with the TBR post…

-Melanie 🙂

November book excitement!

NOVEMBER Y’ALL!!!

enchanted

First- shout out to one of my favorite movies- Enchanted- for that awesome .gif!

Now! I’ve been waiting for November for several reasons.

The first is just that I’m a school librarian and, hello…THANKSGIVING BREAK! I’m looking forward to going to Nashville for the 4th Thanksgiving break in a row. It’s one of my favorite cities and this time a friend is going, so I get to play tour guide.

But the real excitement? BOOKS.

Do I even need to say what book I’m most excited for? Do I?

51m54kDm+DL._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_

My love for the Lunar Chronicles doesn’t play around. I”M PUMPED. TBH though…I still haven’t pre-ordered it because I can’t figure out what to do. I’m trying to save it to read on vacation because I know I’ll be useless once I start it, but it’s huge- something like 800 pages. Should I go ahead and get the hardcover or just get the ebook for now? I can’t decide.

november9

I don’t think I need to elaborate either on this one. This and Winter both come out on the 10th, but I’ll be reading this one ASAP on the 10th. I’m just that obsessed with Colleen Hoover’s books. I’m hearing good things about this one, so I have no doubt it will be just as amazing as her other books!

51OnLALo7oL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

I think this is about to be my next read. Shout out to Anna Banks for sending me an ARC a couple weeks ago! I love her Poseidon books, so an NA book had me intrigued. A girl goes on a Bachelor type show and is surprised to find that the guy she’s supposed to be fighting for is actually her ex—AWKWARD! This is bound to be fun!

clarissa

Out November 10? ALL OF THE THINGS!

No idea why everything is out the same day, but thankfully I’ve already read this one. Look for a review of it this week! It was a blast to revisit the world of Clarissa Darling, but with Clarissa being an adult trying to find her place in the world.  It made me crazily nostalgic for the show and I’m maybe thinking of doing a re-watch soon just because. 🙂

Review: Fairest by Marissa Meyer

fairest

Summary:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall.
Who is the Fairest of them all?

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her “glamour” to gain power. But who is Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story–a story that has never been told . . . until now.
New York Times -bestselling author Marissa Meyer reveals the story behind her fascinating villain in Fairest, an unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes a special full-color image of Levana’s castle and an excerpt from Winter, the exciting conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles

My Thoughts:

I had no idea that I never reviewed Fairest!

So why am I now reviewing a book that came out back in February?

I just re-read Fairest in anticipation for Winter to release in two weeks!

The Lunar Chronicle books always released in the Spring and then Fairest came along and Winter got pushed back to, well, Winter. (okay, yes, I know that November is still Fall.)

Even still- the wait was worth it to have this gem of a novella!

Like most Lunar Chronicles readers, I have HATED Levana. She’s evil and crazy and just…awful. Fairest made me see her in a bit of a different light.

The book shows why she is the way that she is. Granted, this isn’t necessarily like some stories where you find out that she was just misunderstood all this time.

Oh, no. Make no mistake- Levana knows exactly what she’s doing and it is all intentional. However, the reader almost develops some sympathy for Levana thanks to different events—almost….ALMOST!! ….and then you remember all of the crazy things she’s done in response to the things that caused you to have sympathy for her.

So while I wouldn’t say that I really for sorry for Levana, I do feel like the novella made me “get” her to a certain extent. It was definitely a needed addition to the series in order to make sense of her character and actions.

Furthermore, it makes me all that much more excited for Winter! We know more about Winter and Princess Selene’s histories and I’m assuming that will be a large part of Winter now that we know what’s going on. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend reading Winter if you haven’t read Fairest- the information honestly seems to be THAT important!

Now—back to my Winter excitement!

Currently reading and update!

Before I share, can I just take a second to point out that I just realized that WINTER comes out in TWO WEEKS! My excitement for that book is ridiculous. Get on board and read Cinder ASAP if you haven’t yet!

I’m planning to take Winter with me to read on vacation over Thanksgiving break, but I know that I’ll break down and read it before then. Plus, the cover is beautiful, but that book is a MONSTER in size…I don’t want to get the kindle version for vacation just to turn around and also get the hardcover. :/

Anyways…moving on before I fangirl over the Lunar Chronicles too much…

Currently reading:

This is why I’ve been MIA for the past couple of days:

51Kn2ohB8FL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_

I know. EVERYONE is reading it. I know.

I had an eARC for months that was online-only and, while I’m thankful for it, my vision didn’t quite agree with reading the wild fonts on a computer screen. So….I waited even after getting about 100 pages in.

WOW.

If you’ve been on the fence about Illuminae then I will say that it definitely lives up to the hype.

In fact, last night I hit a point in the book that blew me away and I maybe yelled at the book (no, I’m serious!) and then had to take a little mental break from the craziness.

Wanna know what’s sad? The author’s know that spot does this to people! They KNOW:

Screenshot_2015-10-27-10-54-56

Granted, I’ve told a few people that I don’t think it’d be their thing, but I’m still telling everyone else that it’s amazing. GET THIS BOOK! Not only that, it’s just a cool looking book. The actual book itself, not the jacket, is set up to look like a folder with notes and markings all over it to stay with the theme.

It’s awesome and I’ve had students come in the library asking me about it when they see it on the desk. It’s just that good!

I should finish Illuminae today and then I’m also reading How to Be Brave which releases NEXT WEEK! I’ll have a blog tour post with a q&a post from the author next Thursday along with a giveaway, so be on the lookout for that!

Winter- First two chapters available!

51m54kDm+DL._SX318_BO1,204,203,200_

GUESS WHAT!!!

So earlier today I was checking out Amazon and noticed that the first TWO chapters of Winter are available to download for FREE on Kindle!

Sure, there is still almost a month until Winter releases, but…two chapters! It might actually make the wait harder, but it’s there and you should look into it if you are like me and can’t wait for Winter to come out.

Go HERE to get it!

 ALSO!!!!

Thanks to the AWESOME teen at Macmillan and Fierce Reads, I am running a giveaway on Twitter to win a copy of Cinder. I’m also maybe going to throw in a few other fun things, but they’re in charge of the book…because they’re amazing like that.

So go HERE to follow me and RT the tweet to be entered to win!

I’m SO excited for Winter and want everyone to read the awesome that is the Lunar Chronicles. I just ordered the entire series for my new library and I’m ready for them to get in so that I can convert my students into being as hooked as I am with this series!
