Summary:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Wrath and the Dawn, comes a sweeping, action-packed YA adventure set against the backdrop of Feudal Japan where Mulan meets Tamora Pierce.

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor’s favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family’s standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.
Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she’s quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she’s ever known

Why I’m Excited:

First…can we talk about that cover??

200-2

It. Is. Gorgeous.

Renee is lucky in having some of the most beautiful covers ever. I loved the looks for her two previous books and this may be even better.

Now…a take on Mulan.

Sign. Me. Up.

I enjoy Japanese culture and I think Mulan is a highly underrated film in the realm of Disney, so I’m excited to see her get some attention even if it isn’t directly.

Flame in the Mist sounds amazing and we always need more hardcore, kick butt female leads in YA.

Bring it on in May!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Square Root of Summer

Summary:

This is what it means to love someone. This is what it means to grieve someone. It’s a little bit like a black hole. It’s a little bit like infinity.

Gottie H. Oppenheimer is losing time. Literally. When the fabric of the universe around her seaside town begins to fray, she’s hurtled through wormholes to her past:

To last summer, when her grandfather Grey died. To the afternoon she fell in love with Jason, who wouldn’t even hold her hand at the funeral. To the day her best friend Thomas moved away and left her behind with a scar on her hand and a black hole in her memory.

Although Grey is still gone, Jason and Thomas are back, and Gottie’s past, present, and future are about to collide―and someone’s heart is about to be broken.

With time travel, quantum physics, and sweeping romance, The Square Root of Summer is an exponentially enthralling story about love, loss, and trying to figure it all out, from stunning debut YA voice, Harriet Reuter Hapgood.

Why I’m Excited:

Time travel and a physics prodigy…SIGN ME UP.

I’ve been hearing a lot about his book.

Let’s be real- that’s a cute title and the cover is gorgeous.

Soooo…I looked into it some more.

This sounds so much fun! I’m also glad to have a MC who is a math genius. That’s not something that happens very often, so it’ll be different.

I can’t wait for this book and I hope that I enjoy it as much as I’m thinking that I will.

It releases May 3, so check it out when it is available!
